    1888-1952
       Actor y empresario teatral antes de la Primera Gue rra Mundial, despues se convierte en ayudante de direccion para Fox, trabajando con John Ford. En los anos 20 pasa a Universal, donde empieza a dirigir primero cortometrajes y despues peliculas de serie B, sobre todo thrillers y seriales diversos. En el sonoro, al que se adapta aceptablemente, trabaja con intensidad. Es, sin duda, uno de los realizadores mas prolificos del genero; mas de 80 westerns avalan su trayectoria, ni mas ni menos destacada que la de otros muchos, aunque no le falta buen pulso narrativo las mas de las veces. Trabaja, inevitablemente, con actores populares, y tambien prolificos, de los anos 30 y, en menor medida, 40. Peliculas de una hora de duracion, aproximadamente, con argumentos poco elaborados, y algun serial, dirigido en solitario a comienzos del sonoro, y ya en colaboracion unos diez anos despues, constituyen la inmensa mayoria de una filmografia inabarcable.

       Director, guionista, productor y, en ocasiones, compositor y montador de sus peliculas, el antiguo actor Robert Emmett Tansey, de familia vinculada al medio artistico, rodo a lo largo de su vida casi cincuenta westerns, la practica totalidad de su filmografia, con los nombres de Robert Tansey, Robert Emmett, Criag Hutchison, o con su nombre completo. No es un realizador distinguido, tiene poco que ofrecer como creador de universos peculiares, y se limita a una labor rutinaria de plasmacion de historias, las mas de las veces banales, interpretadas por estrellas del western de primer o segundo orden. Como actor, debuto en 1911, pero, a diferencia de su hermano, sus atractivos en la pantalla fueron escasos debido a que era cuatro anos mayor, lo que le convertia, en un actor adolescente y no en un actor infantil.

    1894-1975
       El nombre de Joseph Kane se asocia de forma indisoluble a una productora, Republic, de principio a fin. Kane habia dirigido en 1935 un serial para Mascot, que junto con otras pequenas productoras se asociaron para fundar Republic ese mismo ano. Desde esa fecha hasta 1958, en que la productora desaparece, Kane es uno de sus directores mas prolificos. Estamos ante uno de los grandes nombres del western, en cantidad, ya que no en calidad. Entre 1934 y 1975 trabaja en no menos de 120 peliculas, la inmensa mayoria de las cuales pertenecen al genero que nos ocupa. Trabaja con Gene Autry, John Wayne, Robert Livingston, Roy Rogers, Bill Elliott, en tre otros. Despues dirigira algunos episodios de se ries de television y otras cuatro peliculas. Sus mejores filmes son, sin duda, Titanes de la montana y Los indomables, ya al final de su carrera.

Entre ambos parece transcurrir la vida profesional de este director, poco preocupado por los resultados artisticos de sus peliculas, y si interesado en preservar la “marca de fabrica” asociada a cada una de sus dos estrellas.

Lesley Selander es uno de los grandes especialistas del western, con mas de cien peliculas a sus espaldas. Decir “uno de los grandes especialistas” no es lo mismo que decir “uno de los grandes nombres” y, en efecto, la trayectoria de Selander, en lo que a la calidad de sus peliculas se refiere, es irregular. Lo que, sin embargo, sorprende es que la valoracion media de sus westerns no es baja, lo que indica que el director poseia un especial instinto para el genero, que pone de manifiesto con una plastica mas que correcta y un buen manejo del tiempo de la narracion. Inabarcable por su extension, es dificil senalar los filmes que destacan en tan amplia muestra, pero si me veo en la obligacion de citar alguno, no dudaria en elegir las peliculas que hizo para Allied Artists a finales de los anos 40 y principios de los 50, y algunas otras de las ultimas que realizo, como Dakota Lil o The Broken Star.

  • 16 Mann, Anthony

    1906-1967
       Nacido en Point Loma, hoy integrado en la ciudad de San Diego, California, hijo de emigrantes alemanes, trabaja como actor en Nueva York, ciudad a la que se habian trasladado sus padres. De actor pasa a ser regidor y, algo despues, director. Segun sus propias palabras, trabajo y aprendio mucho con hombres de teatro como Rouben Mamoulian, David Belasco y Chester Erskine. A finales de 1937 lo encontramos trabajando para David O’Selznick como director de casting.
       Finalizada esta etapa breve, se introduce en Paramount, donde aprende verdaderamente el oficio de director. Asi, en 1942 tiene su primera oportunidad como tal; la pelicula, un inteligente producto de serie B, se llamaba Dr. Broadway. En la serie B permanecio Mann durante varios anos, trabajando para Universal (una vez), Republic, RKO y Eagle Lion hasta que, en 1949, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer lo contrata para hacer un punado de peliculas que, si no disponian de presupuestos muy generosos, si le otorgaron la posibilidad de rodar su primer western, La puerta del Diablo (luego pasaria a ser el tercero porque Winchester 73 y Las furias se estrenaron antes). Tan to La puerta del Diablo como Las furias, que rodo para Paramount, tienen tintes shakespearea nos, especialmente la segunda, y desde luego son westerns con un elevado grado de madurez, westerns “distintos”. Pero sera ese mismo ano, 1950, el que vera nacer la primera de un conjunto de peliculas modelicas, cinco en total, dirigidas por Anthony Mann y protagonizadas por James Stewart, que consolidaran al realizador como uno de los iconos del western moderno. Aunque en lo sucesivo se alternaran en la filmografia del director los westerns y los filmes de otro tipo, por ejemplo, los grandes espectaculos visuales como El Cid (1961) y La caida del imperio romano (The Fall of the Roman Empire, 1963), dirigidas en Espana para Samuel Bronston, Mann sera, ya para siempre, “el hombre del oeste”. Budd Boetticher, Delmer Daves, John Ford, Ho ward Hawks, Anthony Mann y Sam Peckinpah son, por orden alfabetico, los grandes nombres del western. A ellos se pueden acercar Henry Hathaway y William A. Wellman, pero probablemente el primero de todos es Anthony Mann, autor de una obra rica y coherente en la que combina a la perfeccion el espacio abierto y sus cualidades, con el ser humano y sus pasiones. El dolor mitico asociado a la venganza lo expresa James Stewart, el actor clave de los westerns de Mann, de modo incomparable, aunque hay que detenerse en la leccion, que roza lo sublime, que nos dictan, a duo, director y actor, en este caso Gary Cooper, en esa obra maestra que se llama El hombre del Oeste. Recurriendo por una vez a la frivolidad, se podria acunar un eslogan publicitario parecido a este: “Si quiere decir western, diga Anthony Mann”.

    1884-1962
       Actor, guionista, director, que empieza a trabajar en el cine en la epoca muda. Son muchos los realizadores norteamericanos cuya semblanza podria empezar de la misma manera; incluso, anadiendo que su especialidad fue el western, como es el caso de McCarthy; incluso, diciendo que su trabajo no fue nada apasionante, como es el caso de McCarthy, que dirige peliculas, hasta un total de cuarenta, entre 1920 y 1945; de ellas, 28 son westerns, aunque la cifra se reduce a 22 si solo incluimos los sonoros. Ya se sabe: peliculas de una hora de duracion, aproximadamente, interpretadas por alguna de las estrellas del western de serie B.
